Harihar fort also known as Harshagad is one of the famous fort for trek located 40km away from Nashik City near Gonda Ghat. It lies in the Trimbakeshwar range at an altitude of 3,676 ft from the sea level

The main attraction of this fort is it’s peculiar series of rock-cut steps. One needs to climb the complete 117 steps which are extremely steep and vertical as almost 80 degrees which takes about an hour to reach the main entrance. Even though thousands of visitors comes here every month from different parts of India to see this magnificent fort of Maharashtra.

There are two ways to approach the fort from base village Harshewadi and another one is Nirgudpada village located on Trimbak-Igatpuri road. The Harshewadi is 13 km from Trymbakeshwar and Igatpuri is the major town if you are planning to ascend from Nirgudpada side.

To reach Nirgudpada from Igatpuri: From Igatpuri, take a bus for Trymbakeshwar and alight at Nirgudpada. Also you can take bus or local vehicle for Goti and take another transport for Nirgudpada.

To reach Harshewadi from Nashik: From Nashik, take a bus for Trymbakeshwar (starting from 5:00 am). From Trymbakeshwar, Harshewadi is on 13 kms and there is no direct public transport available. So you need to take transport up to Kachorli (a village enroute) but frequency is very low. You can hire an auto from Trymbakeshwar but it charges Rs. 400 and drops you to the base village Harshewadi. So your private vehicle is always preferable here.

To reach Nirgudpada from Mumbai: Try to take the first train in the morning to Kasara, from the central line. The train will reach Kasara by 7 AM. Board a shared vehicle to Igatpuri bus station, but the shared vehicles are not frequent, and the vehicles will not start until all seats are occupied. Then from Igatpuri bus station, buses are available to Trimbak starting from 8.30 am. Once you take a bus, after 15 minutes you will reach Ghoti, from there take another transport for Nirgudpada.

Both of these spectacular forts started from the base village Prabalmachi located in Raigad district of Khalapur taluka amidst the western range of Sahyadris. Prabalgad lies at an altitude of 2320 ft.

Prabalgad and Kalavantin Durg located between Panvel and Matheran with a starting point base village Thakurwadi to Prabalmachi Plateu which is around 17 km from Panvel and 50 km from Matheran.

From Mumbai:  Take a train from Mumbai central to Thane and from Thane to Panvel railway station or directly come from harbour line to Panvel. From Panvel bus station, take a state transport bus to Thakurwadi village from there you need to do small trek to the base village Prabalmachi from where the actual trek and climb starts to Prabalgad and Kalavantin Durg.

By road if you are coming with private vehicle, take Mumbai-Pune expressway via Vashi up to Shedung Phata, Panvel. Then take a turn towards the Thakurwadi village from Shedung.

From Pune: Take a train from Pune Junction to Panvel Station which is a 3 hours of journey. From Panvel bus stand which is on 15 minutes of distance from railway station, buses to Thakurwadi are easily available.

By road on old Pune expressway through Lonavala, take a turn towards the Thakurwadi village from Shedung phata which is approximately 2 hours of journey.

Once you reach the base village Thakurwadi, your trek can be divided into four sections.

  1. The first stretch is the small gentle ascent from the start point to Prabalmachi Plateau where you can also stay for camping. The distance is 2.8 km which takes about one and half hour to reach.
  2. The next part is from Prabalmachi to the Col on a distance of 630 meters, half an hour to reach.
  3. The third section would be the final climb from the Col to the peak of Kalavantin durg fort. Distance is 150 meters which can be covered in less than half an hour.
  4. From Kalavantin durg fort, Prabalgad is hardly on 800 mtr which takes around 15-20 minutes to reach.

8. Mahuli Fort Trek

Mahuli fort is situated on a solitary hill on its western face at 2815 ft above the sea level.

Mahuli fort is attractive due to it’s nearby pinnacles such as Vazir and Vishnu, names are given by the local climbing and trekking groups. The surrounding forest of Mahuli has been declared as a sanctuary known as Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary. Due to this sanctuary you may get a chance to see different species of animals and birds nearby, that comes for the water near Tansa Lake.

On top of the fort there is a Shiva Temple and small perennial drinking tank which holds water throughout the year, that freshens the trekkers after so much adventurous climbing. There are also three caves on the fort, of which trekkers use the larger one for overnight shelter and camping.

One of the most famous Kalyan Darwaja is there which is the Konkan side entrance to the fort in structure of stone arch, but the dome of the arch is now broken and it’s access has become difficult, as the Britishers had blew the stone carved steps.

This trek can be approach by two routes, one from Sandashi village – quite confusing and Jambhavali is the second option which is the most preferred route.

Sandashi is on 12 kms distance from the Karjat. One can easily reach Karjat from Mumbai and Pune via railways and roadways. From Karjat buses are available for Sandashi with a good frequency.

Jambhavali is located around 20 kms from Kamshet where you can also stay for your night camping. Local trains from Mumbai and Pune are available for Kamshet from where shared and public local transports are available for Jambhavali.

Winter months October to February are suitable for this trekking, when you may find variety of migrant birds such as the blackbird, the blue-headed rock-thrush, the ashy minivet and the red breasted flycatcher.

Avoid summer season due to very high degree temperature which dehydrates the body and irritates while trekking.

How to reach Karnala Bird Sanctaury

Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located at 60 km from Mumbai, which takes around 2-hour if you are coming via Mumbai-Goa Highway NH-17. 

If you are coming by train then from CST station you will get a train for Panvel or from Thane station you will get Panvel train after every 1 hour which comes via navi mumbai, harbour line. From Panvel station, sanctuary is on 12 km which you can cover by autorickshaws (6 seaters) going towards Pen, taxis and buses within Rs.30-50.

State Transport buses are also available from different parts of Mumbai to Karnala. You can hire ola and uber for family trip which is not that expensive for 4 to 5 people.

For private vehicles, car parking is also available at the base of Karnala Fort.
